MUSEUM COLLECTIONS

Hermitage– from the French ‘ermitage’ translated as ‘quiet retreat’ – was founded by the Empress Catherine the Great in 1764, who bought the collection of a German entrepreneur Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky gathered for the Prussian emperor Friedrich II.
